Corn earworm is the one that actually threatens the ear, entering through the silk channel at the tip and feeding down into the top inch or two of kernels, so peeling back just the top of the husk before harvest shows what is there without opening the whole ear. Aphids and common rust are the lower-stakes pair; rust breaks the leaf surface as small reddish-orange pustules that dust off on a wiped finger, worth a look on lower leaves through the wettest stretches, while aphids favor the softest growth on the stalk, the emerging tassel and the whorl just below it.
