Why this crop skips spring entirely
Garlic is the outlier here: no spring window, only fall, with cloves pushed about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart into the bed. A clove needs a real stretch of winter cold to split apart into the separate cloves gardeners expect at harvest; skip that cold and it grows into one solid, undivided bulb, closer in shape to a large onion than to garlic. Timing that fall planting is a balance. A clove set too early pushes soft top growth that a hard freeze can damage before winter sets in; one set too late may not root before the ground locks up.
