New leaves tell a different story than old ones

Locked-up iron doesn't move that way, so the newest leaves at the tip show the striped yellow-and-green pattern while the older leaves lower down stay a normal color. An iron chelate worked into the soil or sprayed on the leaves can green the plants already showing it, but the chelate has to match the soil: look for one labeled EDDHA, since the more common chelates sold at most garden centers stop working once pH climbs as high as Nevada's ground already sits. Bringing the soil pH down over time is the only fix that keeps the next planting from needing the same treatment.
The beetle that looks like it's helping
Mexican bean beetle is an oddity among garden pests: the adult is coppery orange with black spots, built like an oversized lady beetle, the kind of insect most gardeners have spent years learning to leave alone. It isn't one. The giveaway is the underside of the leaf: a lady beetle hunts aphids there and leaves the tissue alone, while a Mexican bean beetle and its fuzzy, spiny, pale yellow larvae feed on the leaf itself, skeletonizing it into a lace of veins with the green chewed away between them.
Checking leaf undersides for clusters of yellow eggs standing on end, and for the larvae once they hatch, catches an infestation before it skeletonizes enough leaf area to cut yield. A young planting coming up behind an older one already carrying beetles gives the pest a fresh target close by, one more reason spacing sowings apart in time and across the garden pays off here.
