What a sudden wilt in moist soil actually means
Squash vine borer is the pest that separates zucchini from the cucumbers and melons growing nearby, announcing itself in a way that throws gardeners off: a single healthy-looking vine wilting hard in the afternoon heat even though the soil underneath is moist. The borer works from the inside, tunneling through the base of the stem, so the plant is losing its plumbing rather than its water supply. Check the stem right at the soil line for a small hole surrounded by what looks like coarse, wet sawdust; that frass is the confirmation, and by the time it's visible the larva has already been feeding for a while.
Two field fixes are worth trying before pulling the plant. A vertical slit up the stem near the hole, made with a clean knife, lets you find and remove the larva directly, and mounding moist soil over the wound afterward gives the stem a chance to root and recover.
