Three signs that beat counting to eighty-five
With only one planting to work with, guessing wrong about ripeness wastes the season's only shot, so it pays to check more than one sign before cutting a fruit free of the vine. The tendril growing closest to where the fruit meets the stem is the first tell: green and supple means wait, brown and dried means the vine has decided the fruit is finished. The second sign lives where the fruit rests on the soil: the ground spot there should read dull straw or pale gold by harvest time, not the bright white it started as. A knock that returns a low, hollow thud instead of a bright, tight ring is the third. One sign alone can mislead; two or three agreeing rarely do.
For a garden that came up short on a full-size melon in a cool year, a smaller, faster-finishing type is the honest fallback rather than a bigger gamble on the same number of days. They also chew on open blossoms later in the season, damage that is easy to miss since it hides inside the flower rather than sitting on a leaf in plain view. Aphids gather on new growth and the tips of runners throughout the season; a hard spray of water most mornings knocks back a light cluster before it turns into a heavy one.
Anthracnose and gummy stem blight tend to show up together here, and both favor the same wet-leaf conditions a marine climate hands out. Anthracnose shows as dark, sunken spots on leaves and on the fruit's rind, with a pinkish ooze visible in humid weather. Gummy stem blight instead targets the stem itself, cracking it open at a joint and weeping an amber, gummy residue that can girdle and kill the runner beyond that point. A vine that gets past all three problems can still put up around 20 pounds of fruit, heavier per plant than any other vegetable grown here, and the real reason to attempt it despite the climate.
