Companion Plants for Carrots: Onions, Radishes, and One to Avoid

Carrots have two real problems: the seed takes 2 to 3 weeks to come up, and the carrot rust fly finds the row by smell. Two companion choices work directly on those problems, which puts carrots among the few crops where the pairings do something you can point at.

Onions for the fly, radishes for the row

The onion pairing is one of the few with actual intercropping trials behind it. Carrot rust flies and onion flies both locate their crop by smell, and mixing the two masks both scents so fewer flies land on either. It is not a replacement for row cover, but it is real.

Radishes solve a different problem entirely. Carrot seed takes 2 to 3 weeks to germinate, and in that time you cannot tell the row from the weeds. Radishes sprout in 4 days, mark the line, and come out in 25 days, long before carrots need the space.

  • Onions, leeks, and bunching onions: mutual pest confusion, backed by field trials.
  • Radishes sown in the same row: mark the row while carrots germinate, harvested before they compete.
  • Lettuce: shallow-rooted and quick, uses the surface while carrots work downward.
  • Rosemary and sage: aromatic, and they hold the bed edge without shading a low crop.

Keep dill and fennel out of the carrot bed

Dill is the surprise on this list, because plenty of charts recommend it. Dill is in the same family as carrots, and a dill plant left to flower near a carrot row draws the carrot rust fly rather than repelling it. Mature dill also competes hard for the same shallow water.

Grow dill by the cucumbers instead, where its flowers do real work feeding parasitic wasps.

Bulb fennel is the same family again and slows the growth of most neighbors. Parsnips are close relatives too, so keep them out of the same bed and the same rotation slot.

  • Dill: same family, attracts the carrot rust fly, and competes for surface water.
  • Bulb fennel: same family, and it stunts nearby vegetables.
  • Parsnip: close relative, so treat it as the same crop for rotation.

What should never follow carrots

Carrots, parsnips, celery, celeriac, parsley, dill, and cilantro are all one family. They share the carrot rust fly, whose larvae overwinter in the soil, and aster yellows, a disease that shows up as hairy, bitter, discolored roots.

Do not follow carrots with any of those. Give the bed 3 years before the family comes back, and pull every carrot at the end of the season instead of leaving a few in the ground, because leftover roots are exactly where rust fly larvae spend the winter.

  • Do not follow carrots with parsnips, celery, parsley, dill, or cilantro.
  • Give the bed 3 years before the family returns.
  • Harvest every root. Leftovers overwinter the rust fly.

What matters more than any pairing

Forked carrots come from rocks, clods, and fresh manure, not from bad neighbors. Loosen the top 12 inches, pick the stones out, and skip the rich stuff. Then keep the seedbed damp for the full 2 to 3 weeks it takes to germinate, because letting that thin surface dry out once kills the sprouting seed.

Thin to 2 inches apart, and do it even though it feels wasteful. Crowded carrots stay pencil-thin no matter what grows beside them.

The free planner sets your sow dates from your own frost dates and spaces the row so thinning is realistic.

Questions, answered straight

What should not be planted next to carrots?

Dill, bulb fennel, and parsnips. Dill and fennel are close relatives that attract the carrot rust fly and compete for the same shallow water, and fennel stunts neighbors. Parsnips share the family's pests, so keep them in a different bed and rotation slot.

Do onions keep carrot flies away?

Partly. Both the carrot rust fly and the onion fly find their crop by smell, and interplanting masks both. Field trials show fewer flies landing, though the effect is modest. Row cover is still the stronger control.

Why plant radishes with carrots?

Carrot seed takes 2 to 3 weeks to germinate and the row is invisible in the meantime. Radishes sprout in about 4 days to mark the line so you can weed safely, and they are harvested at 25 days, before carrots need the space.
