Square Foot Gardening: How Many Plants Per Square Foot
Square foot gardening splits a bed into 12 inch squares and asks one question for each square: how many plants fit? The answer is not a guess. It comes straight from the spacing each crop needs. One square holds 36 carrots, 16 bush beans, 4 lettuce, or 1 tomato. Here is the math, the chart, and the honest part most guides skip.

The short answer and the formula
Take the in-row spacing the crop needs in inches. Divide 12 by that number and round down. That tells you how many plants fit across one side of the square. Then square it, because a square foot has two sides.
Lettuce needs 6 inches. 12 divided by 6 is 2. Two across and two down is 4 plants per square foot. Carrots need 2 inches. 12 divided by 2 is 6. Six across and six down is 36 carrots in one square.
Round down, never up. If the math gives 1.7, you get 1 plant, not 2. Rounding up is how beds get crowded, and crowded plants trap damp air and grow less food.
- Step 1: find the crop's in-row spacing in inches.
- Step 2: divide 12 by that number and round down.
- Step 3: square the result. That is your plants per square foot.
- Minimum is always 1. A crop never gets zero squares.

These spacings drive the counts. Every number below is 12 divided by the spacing, rounded down, then squared.
- Carrot, 2 inch spacing: 36 per square foot.
- Bush bean, 3 inches: 16 per square foot.
- Spinach, 3 inches: 16 per square foot.
- Cilantro, 4 inches: 9 per square foot.
- Onion, 4 inches: 9 per square foot.
- Lettuce, 6 inches: 4 per square foot.
- Kohlrabi, 6 inches: 4 per square foot.
- Pole bean, 6 inches: 4 per square foot, grown up a trellis.
- Celery, 7 inches: 1 by honest math. See the note below.
- Basil, 8 inches: 1 per square foot.
- Cucumber, 12 inches: 1 per square foot, trellised.
- Potato, 12 inches: 1 per square foot.
- Sweet potato, 14 inches: 1 per square, and it will vine past the edges.
- Kale, 16 inches: 1 per square, and it needs about 2 squares at full size.
- Broccoli, 18 inches: 1 per square, closer to 2 squares each.
- Eggplant, 18 inches: same as broccoli.
- Hot pepper, 18 inches: same as broccoli.
- Asparagus, 18 inches: same, and it stays put for years.
- Tomato, 24 inches: 1 plant needs 4 square feet.
- Summer squash, 24 inches: 1 plant needs 4 square feet.
- Acorn squash, 30 inches: about 6 square feet per plant.
- Winter squash, 36 inches: about 9 square feet per plant.
- Spaghetti squash, 36 inches: about 9 square feet per plant.
- Globe artichoke, 36 inches: about 9 square feet per plant.
The celery problem, and why we do not fake it
Celery wants 7 inches. 12 divided by 7 is 1.7. Round down honestly and that is 1 celery plant per square foot. Some charts say 2, and you can get 2 if you stagger them corner to corner instead of lining them up in a row, because the diagonal across a square foot is about 17 inches.
So the real answer is 1 if you plant in a grid, 2 if you stagger. Both work. Just know which one you did, because 2 staggered celery plants have less room than the packet asks for, and celery that is short on water and room turns stringy.
Where the square foot grid breaks down
Here is the part most square foot guides skip. The grid only works when a crop's spacing is 12 inches or less. Above that, the crop does not fit in a square foot at all, and the honest number is square feet per plant, not plants per square foot.
A winter squash needs 36 inches between plants. That is 3 feet by 3 feet, so about 9 square feet, or 9 whole squares for one plant. A tomato at 24 inches needs about 4 squares. Broccoli and eggplant at 18 inches need about 2 squares each. Squeezing them into one square does not make them smaller, it just makes them sick and unproductive.
The rule: if in-row spacing is over 12 inches, flip the math. Divide the spacing by 12, square it, and that is how many squares the plant claims.
- Spacing 12 inches or less: count plants per square. Divide 12 by spacing, round down, square it.
- Spacing over 12 inches: count squares per plant. Divide spacing by 12, then square it.
- Kale at 16 inches: about 2 squares per plant.
- Tomato at 24 inches: 4 squares per plant.
- Winter squash at 36 inches: 9 squares per plant.
Laying out the grid in a real bed
A 4 foot by 4 foot raised bed is 16 squares. Mark them with string, thin wood strips, or just a stick drawn in the soil. The grid is not decoration. It stops you from drifting into a solid carpet of seedlings by week three.
Four feet is the standard bed width for a reason: you can reach 2 feet from either side without stepping in the bed. Compacted soil costs you root growth, so plan every bed so no square is more than an arm's reach away.
Put the big square hogs where they will not shade the rest. Tomatoes and squash go on the north side of the bed so the lettuce and carrots still get sun. Then fill the small squares last, because 36 carrots go in fast once the big plants are set.
- 4 by 4 bed: 16 squares. Fill 12 with quick crops and leave 4 for one tomato.
- 4 by 8 bed: 32 squares. That is enough for a family salad supply plus 2 tomatoes.
- Never step in the bed. Keep every square within 2 feet of an edge.
- Tall crops on the north side, short crops south.
Get your exact layout
The chart gets you close. Your bed is a specific size, and your family eats a specific amount, so the real layout is a math problem worth doing once. That turns a rough grid into a plant list you can take to the garden center, so you buy 4 broccoli starts instead of 12 and skip the thinning heartbreak in June.
Questions, answered straight
It depends on the spacing the crop needs. Divide 12 by the spacing in inches, round down, then square it. That gives 36 carrots at 2 inch spacing, 16 bush beans at 3 inches, 9 onions at 4 inches, and 4 lettuce at 6 inches.
Four. Lettuce needs 6 inches between plants. 12 divided by 6 is 2, and 2 by 2 is 4 heads per square foot. Two squares gives you 8 heads, which is a steady salad supply for two people.
Sixteen. Bush beans need 3 inches. 12 divided by 3 is 4, and 4 by 4 is 16 plants. Spinach uses the same 3 inch spacing, so it is 16 per square too.
Not really. A tomato needs 24 inches between plants, which is 4 square feet per plant, not 1 plant per square foot. You can put one tomato in a single square, but it will crowd its neighbors, trap damp air, and give you less fruit. Give each tomato 4 squares.
