Companion Plants for Zucchini: Pollination Is the Real Win

Zucchini makes separate male and female flowers, and the pollen has to be carried from one to the other by an insect. A female flower that does not get enough pollen sets a fruit that starts, then aborts.

That means flowers near the patch are not decoration. They are what keeps enough bees moving through the plant during the few morning hours the blossoms are open.

This is the best-supported companion mechanism there is, because you can watch it work.

• Borage: flowers heavily right through zucchini season and pulls in bees reliably.
• Dill and cilantro left to flower: nectar for hoverflies and parasitic wasps, which also work on aphids.
• Nasturtium: pollinator draw plus a trap crop for squash bugs.
• If fruit still aborts, hand-pollinate in the morning with a small brush. It takes 10 seconds per flower.

Trap crops for squash bugs and beetles

Squash bugs and squash vine borers are the pests that end zucchini plants outright. Trap cropping is a real, studied technique here: squash bugs strongly prefer certain squash over others, so a couple of sacrificial plants at the edge of the patch concentrate them where you can find and remove them.

Check the undersides of leaves on the trap plants for the bronze egg clusters and crush them. Doing that on two trap plants is realistic. Doing it across a whole patch is not, which is why the technique earns its space.

Bush beans work alongside zucchini as well, adding nitrogen without competing for light, since zucchini leaves sit above them.

What to keep away, and what should never follow

Potatoes are the neighbor to avoid. Both are prone to fungal trouble, and zucchini's big leaves over potato hills hold still, damp air. They also compete hard for water at the same point in summer. Bulb fennel belongs away from zucchini for the same reason it belongs away from everything.

The rotation rule is the important one. Zucchini, summer squash, winter squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, melons, and gourds are all cucurbits. Squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and vine borers overwinter in the soil and debris where the crop grew, and bacterial wilt travels with them.

Do not follow zucchini with any cucurbit, and give the bed 3 years. Pull the spent vines out at the end of the season instead of leaving them to break down in place, because that debris is the overwintering site.

• Give the bed 3 years before cucurbits return.
• Remove spent vines instead of tilling them in.

What matters more than any pairing

Two zucchini plants feed most households, and three will bury you. Planting fewer is the single best decision in this crop, and it also gives each plant the airflow that keeps powdery mildew down.

Pick at 6 to 8 inches, every day or two at peak. A zucchini left to turn into a baseball bat tells the plant to stop making new fruit, and the giant one is not good eating anyway.
