A long last chance list, earlier than colder zones see it

Zone 10's crop count drops from around 73 in March to the low 50s this month, and nearly everything still listed is marked as a last chance rather than a fresh start, tomato, pepper, eggplant, watermelon, cantaloupe, and a long run of herbs among them. That contraction lands about a month earlier here than it does further north, since zone 10 summer heat arrives on a faster schedule.

If a tomato or pepper transplant is still sitting in a nursery pot, get it into the ground in the first 2 weeks of the month rather than the last, since a plant given even 3 extra weeks of mild spring growth before summer heat sets in tends to size up enough to keep setting fruit once temperatures climb.

Specialty crops are squeezing in a final start

Ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, bay laurel, and a handful of tender herbs share this month's closing window, and all of them tolerate a late April start better than a tomato does, since none depend on cool nights to set flowers or fruit the way heat sensitive vegetables do.

Scarlet runner bean, cucamelon, and malabar spinach are worth considering if the rest of the list already feels late; all three germinate reliably in warm soil and mature fast enough, generally under 70 days, to still produce a harvest even from an April start.

Water planning matters more than fertilizer this month

Set up drip irrigation or soaker hoses now rather than in the middle of summer, since a system installed while soil is still workable and plants are small takes a fraction of the time it takes once beds fill with sprawling squash and tomato vines. A steady inch of water a week, delivered slowly rather than in one heavy soak, carries plants through the coming heat far better than sporadic deep watering.
